Christians have been gathering to worship for two millennia, and have been learning about Christianity for almost as long. It crucial for all Christians to be instructed in order to grow in their faith outside of actual worship. Much of the richness and tradition of our unique worship service is lost without instruction: Why do we celebrate the Eucharist each week? Why does the service sound partly Protestant and partly Catholic? Where did the Prayer Book come from? Why do we still read the Old Testament when I thought that Christians followed the teachings of the New Testament? Christian Formation begins in childhood and never ceases, just as our faith journey continues our whole lives. During the school year, Christ Church youth and adults gather for an intergenerational gathering at 9:15 and then go to age-appropriate classes that start at 9:30 a.m. - Join us! Nursery – Staffed by devoted volunteers, a nursery is available to infants and toddlers during Sunday worship, on special occasions, and at special services and events. Parents who wish to have their small children to receive communion or a blessing at the altar rail are invited to get them from the nursery as others begin to receive communion. Please know that children are always welcome in the worship service. Children Classes – Children learn their faith through stories and creative expression, using a Biblical lectionary-based curriculum. Youth Classes – Modern teaching curricula endorsed by the Episcopal Church is used to teach the youth. The youth engage in projects, group discussion and learn how to begin to verbalize their faith. Adult Classes – Many adults perceive "Sunday School" as for children only, then realize their faith journeys were "frozen" in adolescence. Christian Formation never ends! Adults bring their wealth of life experience to class and find that the voices of the Bible speak to them on an entirely different and at a richer level. There are several classes, some year-round and some seasonal – watch the bulletin and newsletter for details. Lenten / Advent Adult Offerings – Guest speakers offer a series of discussions tied to the Church Year. Inquirer’s Classes – A series of classes offered for those who wish to explore what it means to be a Christian in the Episcopal Church, and/or to explore the process of confirmation or reception in the Episcopal Church. This is also a great forum for those who wish to deepen their relationship to God by reaffirming their baptismal vows in a formal way. This class is for people aged 16 to adult. Contact the rector for details. Vacation Bible School – This week of summer fun and formation is an extremely popular program at Christ Church. The volunteers have as much fun as the children. Geared for ages 3 - 12 grade, and offered in early August, Christian thought and teachings are expressed in a fun and different way. Lots of hands-on experience and great fellowship!

Christian Formation Volunteer Opportunities – Would you like to teach? It’s good to switch positions and be the leader instead of the learner. We are always looking for folks to lead children, youth or adult classes. Would you like to play with the babies? Many hands make light work in the nursery – and it wouldn’t have to be every Sunday. We follow ALL "safe church" guidelines! Contact the church for details! |
